Mark Jackson
On Dwight Howard:
"I think he was in a pretty good rhythm offensively all night long. The guy missed 18 free throws. I can understand people thinking 'Why?' but don't get caught up in the free throws, think about when we didn't foul him; dunks, hooks, at the rim - he's a great player and a bad free throw shooter. To give ourselves the best chance possible, we tried to mess up their rhythm and take their three point shooters away, which we did, but they made plays. I tell you what, my guys are working. Frustrating to lose, but we battled and we look forward to what lies ahead. A tough loss."
On if he would have fouled Dwight Howard if Kwame Brown were available:
"No. And I wouldn't have done it if Dre (Andris Biedrins) was on the court because I thought he did an outstanding job of playing Dwight Howard one-on-one. We have two bodies that can defend him one-one-one and force him away from the painted area, and that's Dre (Andris Biedrins) and Kwame Brown. Being shorthanded after that we go to the small guys and he basically got where he wanted. Immediately, you have to figure out a way to stop a great player and his weakness is foul shooting."
On Klay Thompson:
"He's a knock down shooter. He's doing a great job coming off being aggressive and he's very effective when he slows the game down. He's playing extremely well right now for us. It's good to see him in rhythm because we're going to need him."
David Lee
On the game plan for Dwight Howard:
"That's what coach drew up for us. He was shooting 42% from the line, he hit 21 of 39 free throws, thats a chance you take. He chose to play him head up on the block. He fouled out Andris (Biedrins), Ekpe (Udoh) and myself at the end there. He played well. I thought our team really fought and did a really good job shorthanded."
On upcoming road trip:
"The fact of the matter is we have four teams who are below .500, we need to take care of business. There's nothing to be said if we come back with a losing record on this road trip, it should be a huge disappointment. This is a road trip were we need to take care of business and get at least three or four games to come back here right at .500. I don't see it any other way at this point. We're playing good basketball."
Monta Ellis
On if there is an urgency to win now:
"We're close. We did everything we could've tonight. They made big shots down the end. I was satisfied with the performance. It just let us know where we stand if we play like this every night. We just have to go on this road trip and handle business."
- Dorell Wright DNP because of a knee contusion.
- Road trip! We first swing by Charlotte to pick up Stephen Curry. The last reports I heard is that he won't play though.

Didnt we sign Kyrylo Fesenko?
Does anyone know whats going on with him? I dont see him on the roster. I think he would have been very useful tonight.
s2krazyyy - January 12, 2012
No
Backed away from that, he’s injured
Badly Browned - January 12, 2012
Back injury
Never signed
dubzfan - January 12, 2012
Nope
KD1 - January 13, 2012
Well, I'm gonna vote an actual Warrior
So Monta get my vote
Badly Browned - January 12, 2012
+! Monta is playing his heart out! Result: 5th in NBA scoring; 6th in assists (!-right there with Rubio); up there in steals and rebounds (for guards)!!! With defenses keying on him!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
What? His rebounding has been atrocious this season, even by his low standards: 2.5 per 36.
His scoring efficiency has also been bad: .505 ts%.
His passing has been excellent (7.1 assists per 36), though it should be noted that his turnovers have proportionally increased (3.7 per 36). He’s not really “right there with Rubio,” who’s averaging 9.8 assists and 4.1 turnovers per 36.
On the bright side, his defensive PM numbers are way up, which could be a sample size error or could be indicative of improved effort. Anecdotally, he does seem to be gambling less and playing more focused on that end.
Obviously, he’s playing his heart out. He’s always done that. I don’t think even his harshest critics would suggest that his shortcomings as a player come from lack of heart.
Last night I thought he was really good. Absent the lame hack-a-Dwight strategy, his second half heroics might have won us the game.
Sleepy Freud - January 13, 2012
he's still not good defensively
but it’s pretty clear hes not bottom of the league anymore
bigkino217 - January 13, 2012
Yep, no Curry, handling the ball more, no one else scoring, he is 6th in NBA in assists per game, playing his heart out....just ask his coach!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
Also, Sleepy, you and others need to get off Monta's case. He is the only guy we got that can really score at will; he is carrying this team!
It is time to realize that he is the closest thing to a superstar that we have. Curry-Monta backcourt would be feared if we can ever get them on the court together again!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
If Monta could score at will, you'd think his TS% would be at least league average.
But it’s substantially below league average. Not borderline, like last season. Downright crappy.
“Score at will.” I think those words mean something different from what you think they mean.
Ronaldinho - January 13, 2012
Did you even read what I wrote? I’m not “on his case.” I posted a bunch of facts, some flattering to Monta, some not so much. One of these facts — his terrible rebounding numbers — directly contradicts what you wrote. If you want to spout tired sports cliches (“playing his heart out,” “carrying the team” e.g.), that’s totally fine, but if you’re going to use this board to spread blatant misinformation, sorry, but I’m going to call you on it.
Sleepy Freud - January 13, 2012
Monta, and, oh yes, double-double, Lee, are carrying this team right now!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
carrying this team to a 3-7 record
woohoo
bigkino217 - January 13, 2012
Monta, and, oh yes, double-double, Lee, are carrying this team right now!
Stop being a blind Monta lover like most dubs fans. Hes a chucker straight up chucker, look at his TS% percentage. He is only getting high avg assist because hes in the game for 40+ minutes. If he was actually carrying this team, we would be winning games. It doesnt matter about how much points he avg a night. It matters about wins. It may seem like hes some superstar but in hindsight he is just a player who shoots a bunch of shots on a crappy team. I’m sorry to put it all bluntly but thats where we are.
richstyle - January 13, 2012
Good game by Monta, but I liked what I saw from Klay tonight. People need to start giving this guy some credit. For a #11 pick, he has looked pretty good these last several games. After tonight’s game he is shooting 44.4% from 3, so we can finally stop with the “Klaynk” nickname.
Pippen - January 12, 2012
After tonight’s game he is shooting 44.4% from 3, so we can finally stop with the "Klaynk" nickname.
Klank was the sound of our hopes falling on the draft room floor when they passed on Burks and Leonard, has nothing to do with his 3 point shooting.
Skeptic con Urquell - January 12, 2012
Why are people so high on Burks and not Thompson? What exactly has he proven?
Pippen - January 12, 2012
What exactly has he proven?
that people are more high on him.
Skeptic con Urquell - January 12, 2012
“Some” poeple. And other were higher on Thompson. I’d probably trade Thompson for Leonard, but I’ll take him over Burks. I tend to have more trust in Jerry West than most of the amateur GM’s on this blog.
Pippen - January 12, 2012
I tend to have more trust in Jerry West than most of the amateur GM’s on this blog
maybe you are more of a laker’s fan than most amateur GM’s on this blog are? My guess is most don’t trust him due to his background. I just think he’s not as in touch with the current game and younger players as some of the other guys we coulda hired. He apparently din’t even want to consider leonard because Klank’s dad was a lakers announcer?
Skeptic con Urquell - January 12, 2012
Hardly, I can’t stand the Lakers. You are the one that lists yourself as a Lakers fan. I do however have a lot of respect for Jerry West’s baskeball knowledge. I don’t think he is out of touch. By his own account, even when he was retired he spent hours a day watching and studying college and NBA basketball. I seriously doubt he was high on Klay simply because his dad is a Lakers announcer. You can’t blame West for not taking Leonard. Riley is the guy that seemed to dismiss him, not West.
Pippen - January 13, 2012
You are the one that lists yourself as a Lakers fan
Haha, I’m a lakers player fan not a lakers management fan. West was good in the day and the place but this is not the day or the place.
Retired guys dabbling in their field are not the same as fully involved guys looking to better their career. West has no real reason to need this job so I doubt he takes it as seriously as a younger guy would. If we wanted old we shoulda kept nellie and enjoyed nellie ball for another year, why the double standard?
Skeptic con Urquell - January 13, 2012
West isn’t a full time GM, he is merely a consultant. He doesn’t need to put in 80 hr weeks to be a valuable asset. He doesn’t study basketball because he has to, he does it because he is a basketball junkie. You don’t lose the ability to judge talent as you age. Don Nelson is an entirely different story. He wasn’t a consultant, he was the head coach. His heart obviously wasn’t in it any more and he didn’t have the good health or stamina to do his job proficiently. It’s not a double standard, because it is two entirely different situations.
Pippen - January 13, 2012
skep might be the only person constantly mentioning burks. a lot of us wanted kawhi
bigkino217 - January 13, 2012
skep might be the only person constantly mentioning burks.
I just said he looked best based on pre draft film. I got no idea how the rookie players have worked out so far. After draft performance has nothing to do with pre draft evaluation.
Skeptic con Urquell - January 13, 2012
I’m pretty sure people were saying he couldn’t shoot and were typing “Klaynk” every time he missed a shot in the game threads.
Pippen - January 12, 2012
Klay Thompson, 44% from 3s so far?
That’s a lot higher than I thought it would be. If he keeps this up and increases his volume a little more, he could be a more skilled replacement to Anthony Morrow’s 3pt shooting.
IQofaWarrior - January 12, 2012
If he keeps this up and increases his volume a little more, he could be a more skilled replacement to Anthony Morrow’s 3pt shooting
haha, and if he really worked on his defense he might get to be as good as pietrus then we could send him away to a team that values him ?
Skeptic con Urquell - January 13, 2012
lol pieturs never shot 40% from 3
Brownie13 - January 13, 2012
came real close in We Believe at 39%
starbury_to_s-jaxci2000 - January 13, 2012
Yeah, he is finally starting to look more comfortable out there. I think there is an excellent chance he finishes the year above 40% from 3.
Pippen - January 13, 2012
unfortunately, his fg% is currently lower than his 3%
bigkino217 - January 13, 2012
He's a rookie who had a short camp and no summer league.
I’m totally baffled by the “Klay sucks” contingent on GSOM. Every time he misses a shot a bunch of people make posts like “Klank Thompson” or whatever.
He’s a rookie getting used to the speed of the pro game. Everybody needs to chill out. He’s already much better than he was in his first game.
Ronaldinho - January 13, 2012
Yep, he has had two good games, hope he is getting there!
Major J is shaking up the bench with Curry out and personnel losses. I like that. I like the way he is slowly bringing Jenkins in; giving him starts and ten minutes, or, so per game. He is responding well. I like the way he is bringing Thompson in. I also like the way he is bringing Tyler in (!); consistent minute per game! Clearly, his utilization of Nate is right on! I think Major J is squeezing all he can out of the seriously depleted personnel roster that he has been given to work with. Impressive!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
Klay
ok, second time I’ve seen him look like he belonged in the NBA.
yeah, if those outside shots fall, and he stops looking like such a rookie, he could be ok…still not sold on him by any stretch, but at least now I understand the vision of seeing him and Steph playing together
Duby Dub Dubs - January 13, 2012
Dwight Howard gets my vote
doubleteapot - January 12, 2012
boo
Warrior Wonder shouldn’t go to a Magic
Brownie13 - January 13, 2012
Hack-A-Howard "defense" keeps Warriors in the game, keeps crowd and TV audience out of the game
haha, I guess Jackson mis understood when everyone said they wanted them to go get a big man ?
Skeptic con Urquell - January 12, 2012
Lee did a nice job posting up a bunch of chairs
But he couldn’t score on Dwight in a million years. Dwight absolutely manhandled him on defense whenever everyone else had to leave due to foul trouble.
doubleteapot - January 12, 2012
Dwight absolutely manhandled him on defense whenever everyone else had to leave due to foul trouble.
Jackson must have used Shaq math to add up the possible outcome from all the fouls?
Skeptic con Urquell - January 12, 2012
That's nothing against Lee
Howard does that to everyone in the world…
steffun4tw - January 12, 2012
+101! Amen! Lee played great!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
Lee played great
We haven’t had a P forward as good in decades. Imagine him next to Howard instead of against. I really think this game would have been ours if we had Kwame.
fotd - January 13, 2012
yeah, I thought of Lee when the announcers mentioned that playing Anderson was a "luxury"
the Magic can afford to have a soft defender at the PF because they’ve got Dwight freakin Howard
also, I think Lee needs to start working on his 3-pointer range
Duby Dub Dubs - January 13, 2012
lol...I never thought I would read that....we went from feast to famine on 3pt shooting!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
I'm debating whether I really want an opponent to be in the poll in the future
What do you guys think?
IQofaWarrior - January 12, 2012
As long as it's not Kobe I don't have a major problem with it.
Pippen - January 12, 2012
If said opponents shoots 39 free throws?
Sure, why not.
steffun4tw - January 12, 2012
imo
In games with absolute stinkers, I don’t mind.
But tonight DLee and Monta were deserving enough
Badly Browned - January 12, 2012

Badly Browned - January 12, 2012
Dwight had one of the best games in his career
He could not be stopped.

Raiiny - January 13, 2012

dinohealth - January 13, 2012
But he's not a Warrior
Brownie13 - January 13, 2012
When a guy absolutely dominated like Dwight did, yes
doubleteapot - January 12, 2012
i guess i'll use this rule
If the opponent’s performance is record setting, or completely and utterly out of this world.
And not named Kobe. And not named LeBron.
IQofaWarrior - January 12, 2012
Perfect
doubleteapot - January 12, 2012
One exception
If LeBron chokes, he goes in the poll :D
steffun4tw - January 12, 2012
hahahaha
of course!
IQofaWarrior - January 12, 2012
Dwight is allowed but no LeBron or Kobe?
That’s dumb. If you’re going to allow some (don’t want either, should allow all).
Brownie13 - January 13, 2012
As impartial as I try to be,
there are just certain things I don’t want to do, like supporting Kobe or LeBron. That’s not to say I don’t respect their skills and talents. In fact, I actually like Kobe’s vicious, competitive, unflappable demeanor. I wish our players had that kind of attitude. But asking people to vote for them? Just can’t do it.
And besides, I don’t plan on including players from the opposite team very often. Off the top of my head, the only time I can remember including an opponent was when Stephen Jackson took a bad final shot and gave us the game over the Bobcats.
IQofaWarrior - January 13, 2012
So GSOM fans have to as a consensus like the player
and they have to have an amazing game?
I get putting the choker or bad player of another team up as a joke, but in a loss its frustrating to see a player from another team getting more respect from some of our fans than our entire team.
Brownie13 - January 13, 2012
You know, I don't really have a rule about when to include opponents
In fact, I originally did NOT include Dwight Howard in the poll choices. But I happened to see a couple people asking in the game thread for Dwight Howard to be a choice, and I hesitantly obliged. It still didn’t feel right to me, which is why I asked about whether I really should do it or not in the future.
So now that I think about it, I suppose it will just have to depend on what kind of performance it was, and if it was a really, really, really, really, really unusual or out of this world performance. So if LeBron or Kobe went nuts and busted out with a quintuple-double against us, as much as I’d hate to support either of those two, I’d HAVE to give people a chance to recognize their performance.
IQofaWarrior - January 13, 2012

the franchise player don’t ask the other players if he can take the shot so step up and make it.
If it was me i’d put whoever gave us the win no matter who he played for , even refs, cheerleaders catchin Lebron’s eye, etc.

The fact we were as good as we were without 3 of our better players
Especially our post defender is awesome , pissed that we lost but still. Otis Smith was here, maybe he was looking at our guys to see who he wants and hopefully he liked Klay.
I think with a fully healthy squad (minus Kwame cause he’s done for the year until mid playoffs) we can make the playoffs, but we need to get healthy fast
dubzfan - January 12, 2012
The fact we were in the game minus 3 of our better players shows alot of progress for the warriors. I think alot of the team is finally figuring out how to play together. At the same time its been good for the team without Curry because if they do end up trading Curry away it gives them a practice run to see what itd be like without him in the lineup.
SDMcCloskey - January 13, 2012 via mobile
There was an adjustment period
But overall without him we have been fine, better with him but losing him isn’t like destroying our team
dubzfan - January 13, 2012
I suggest we change the heading to include something like “… and Dwight Howard is taking yet another free throw” since Pinstriped Post did something similar when we bombarded them with a ton of 3-pointers that one game last season.
WYK - January 12, 2012
LOL Great idea

Played with a lot of heart tonight..
We wanted that win. Bloody stupid Orlando three pointers… I hate Jameer and Redick… Now Von Wafer too..
I feel so bad for Ellis.. He does everything he can he help this team win. Really wanna see Dwight in a Warriors uni now.
Potential - January 13, 2012
I haven't been able to watch a lot of games this year
But I remember Jackson using the hack-a strategy early on Deandre Jordan too. Didn’t fix anything in that game either. Has this worked for him in any of the Warriors wins? The negatives (confidence destroyer, foul outs, they can actually hit free throws, awful for the fans) seem to outweigh the positives (opponent confidence destroyer, disrupt offensive rhythm, hopefully one point instead of two on this possession, but you never know). Of course it’s a small sample size, but god what an awful sample size to watch. A close game that no one in the Oracle could care about because of how it had been kept close. Dwight called it disrespectful, and I agree.
Plus, if he wanted to go through with this strategy from the beginning of the game, Jackson should’ve put in Jeremy Tyler to do some of that fouling. The Warriors were already short on centers tonight, he could ill afford to have them foul out.
ohcleverhansyou - January 13, 2012
Dwight actually said the opposite, he said it was a sign of respect in the post game interview. As far as it’s effectiveness I don’t really know what else we could have done with Howard without our second center. I think that most double teams would have ended up as with and-1’s, as he couldn’t bench press two of our other big’s without breaking a sweat.
And hack-a-DJ worked. They had to pull him. We didn’t win, but I don’t think that it was because of that.
AYEq - January 13, 2012
Alright, I wasn't sure about that quote
Going off hearsay from the Magic blog. And yeah, I don’t have much of an alternative solution, I just hate to see basketball look this bad. Especially if it doesn’t result in wins, but again, small sample size.
ohcleverhansyou - January 13, 2012
Hack-a-DJ at least makes a lot of sense from a mathematical perspective, as his career ft% is 41.9% (though he’s “improved” to 47.5% this season). Hack-a-Dwight (career 59.5% ft) is both mathematically dumb and aesthetically unpleasant.
Sleepy Freud - January 13, 2012

Now close your eyes and imagine yourself in Warriors uniform! Hmmmmm!

dinohealth - January 13, 2012
Great effort with what we have (left)! Major Jackson's strategy was OK; "warriors", "battled", as "fighters" should!
Just not enough “artillery”, particularly, up front. And, once again, IQ comes through with all the poop to help us understand and analyze another “battlefield” loss….:)
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
Probably worst game I've attended live in a while
For exactly that hack-a-howard= boring.
tafkasam - January 13, 2012
Well, Major J tried it; it didn't work. It's not like he had many options; few people in the league can play Dwight straight up!
dinohealth - January 13, 2012
it's not like he had many options?
we coulda run them off the floor and scored more than them. Those were all pretty slow boyz. instead of attacking their strength attack their weakness.
Skeptic con Urquell - January 13, 2012
Ryan Anderson is incredibly overrated
Just like all ‘decent’ players next to superstars are.
Would I like him? Sure.
Would I prefer him at 1.5 mil to Lee/Biedrins conrtracts? Yes
Am I confident he’s better than LEe or worth more thsan 6-7 mil a year? Absolutely not.
Especially without Dwight.
-This represents the problem of judging players soley on numbers. A good player, next to a true elite one can reallly look good.

By whom? Most casual fans probably haven’t even heard of him. I’d guess if you polled most NBA observers, very few would rate him the Magic’s second-best player. And yet, even allowing for the positive influence of Dwight, Ryan Anderson is almost certainly that. (The positive influence of Dwight naturally applies to everyone on the team).

Lots of people on here and elsewhere look at his great efficiency and shooting and assume he's awesome
Outside of Orlando and he’s not that good
dubzfan - January 13, 2012
Sounds like a bit of a strawman. I don’t recall anyone ever saying Anderson was “awesome.” He’s probably the second-best player on the Magic, which ain’t saying much, but is almost certainly more than the average fan gives him credit for. That alone is enough to make the phrase “incredibly overrated” ring pretty hollow.

I really don't understand thi so called 'strategy'.
This may sound rather strange but let me introduce myself first. Like most europeans I grew up playing and watching football. Ok, I’ll call it soccer for you guys. I didn’t know anything about basketball when I bought NBA LIve 95 a very long time ago. For some reason I loved playing with Sprewell in that game. He was the only reason why I became a Warriors fan. I still support this team, even though I’ve never been to the Oracle Arena. Unfortunately i can’t watch that many Warriors via streams because, well, I tend to sleep at night. To cut a long story short, you guys simply know much more about basketball than I do. So I’d like to ask you a simple question:
Isn’t this “hack-a-……….”-strategy incredibly lame? In soccer, a coach would get fined for telling his players to foul someone intentionally. In basketball nobody seems to have a problem with it. I really don’t get it. For someone who didn’t grow up with basketball this so called strategy simply means: “We hereby admit that we’re a terrible team, we have no real strategy, we have no clue how to beat the other guys.”
Please don’t misunderstand me. I love the warriors and basketball is my second favourite sports. i simply don’t understand, why this seems to be so widely accepted.
PS: Please excuse my rusty English.

Your English is fine. In soccer, a fould of this nature would result in a penalty inside the box, which is a game-turning proposition.
Fouling a weak foul shooter in basketball is an accepted practice, without the same impact that it may have in soccer, and more comparable to the open-field, non-yellow card, “inadvertent” fouls in soccer. The weak foul-shooting basketball player usually misses 50% of his shots from the free throw line, which is better than (in Dwights case) making 60-70% of 2 point shots! Sometimes this strategy may backfire in the unlikely event that the weak free throw shooter has and exceptional night (for him) from the free throw line.

it’s a tool allowed by the rules. They could just change the rules and eliminate the problem but in reality it doesn’t work well in most situations so not worth worrying about much.

I was at the airport this morning and there was Dwight Howard shooting FTs

That BS display of "hacking" just made it even harder to attract a Superstar
Such as Dwight Howard. After the game he talked about being disrespected by the W’s using the fouling strategy. Guys like that take everything into account when they make a decision to play for a team in any market. The TBS guys were making fun of Jacksons “strategy” and I don’t blame them as it was embarrassing. Should have employed it about 50% less than we did, and try to play them straightup the rest of the time. Did Jeremy Tyler even get in the game ? What the hell are we waiting for – nothing to lose – try him out – Jackson seems to have no problem giving Klay lots of minutes… why not Tyler ?

I thought he said it was a sign of respect ? I didn't watch the interview but thats what I read
And the NBA isn’t on TBS
dubzfan - January 13, 2012
The TBS guys can't have it both ways.
First they note that GS has always played an entertaining brand of basketball, and although Jackson thinks he can keep the W’s offense exciting, he will prioritize winning. Then they complain about an arguably effective strategy that slows the game.
Blame the rules, not the coach.

There should be an asterisk
to Howard’s FT record. I doubt there was a hack-a-wilt back in the day. He earned all of his 34 FTA’s. Howard didn’t earn half his 39.
