I'll take a Bud Light!
Blog Buddy: Celtics Blog
The final outcome was pretty much what we all expected, a blowout win for the Celtics. The Warriors hung tough for the first half, but when that 3rd quarter came around, boy oh boy, that was rough. The Celtics didn't put the Warriors away, they just let the Warriors hang around for most of the 3rd. When the Warriors didn't take advantage of the Celtics early on in that quarter, the Warriors were doomed because once the Celtics found their groove, the Warriors never did, and that's all she wrote. The 1 point halftime lead ballooned to 13 and the Celtics pretty much coasted to victory extending their lead to as much as 16 and never lower than 10. The Warriors put forth a solid effort but that just wasn't good enough.
On a side note, amazingly, my prediction, Warriors by -14 was right on point. Crazy. That's never happened before. Come to me for all your gambling needs.
Hit the jump for some thoughts:

1) Things I Liked
Let's start with the good things.
Is it just me or is there a different feeling when watching the team? No Jax around and there seems to be better team chemistry. The ball moves better, there are less ill-advised shots, and guys seem to be hustling and trying harder. Maybe I just want to feel that way since Jax is gone, but after watching 2 games without him, something feels different, something better.
I like Raja Bell simply for volunteering to play when he knew the Warriors were down to just 7 guys. His wrist is injured enough that he needs surgery on it, yet he still volunteers on playing. I like that and his 23 minutes where he shot 3-3 from 3.
Corey Maggette is playing some of the best ball I've seen him play as a Warrior. He's really working out there and hustling, doing some of the dirty work, and banging inside on defense (not just offense). While he shot just 6-9 from the line, I appreciate his willingness to stop taking so many long jumpers and rather take mid-range jumpers instead while also going inside (where he's best). On a team that falls in love with the long jumpers, they're going to need someone who knows how to score in the paint off of a post up, and Maggette has shown a willingness to do just that. If this is the new Maggette we're going to see for the rest of the year, I'll be very happy.
Randolph always shows us a little glimpse of what he's capable of. He's got these moments where he's able to corral all of his energy and put together a few minutes where he's focused and doing everything right. And then other times, he's just simply out of control. Tonight, he showed us glimpses of what we're all hoping he does in the future.
Lastly, I liked that Monta was able to get in the lane against the Celtics. He's just going to have to convert some of those layups. The old Monta did, but I'm still waiting to see if the new Monta can. Maybe he's still getting used to game speed but it's a little disconcerting that he's not able to finish drives like he did before nor is he able to knock down the mid-range jumpers like he did before.
2) The 3rd Quarter Woes Continue
The Warriors just cannot put together a decent 3rd quarter. After being down by just 1 point at the half, the Warriors came out and stunk up the Boston Garden. It started out fine, at the 8:48 mark the score was tied at 55. And then the drought began. The Warriors couldn't get any points, not a field goal or a free throw. They scored their 56th point at the 4:18 mark - 4.5 minutes without scoring a point. Yikes! It was the combination of 3 turnovers and 7 missed shots that doomed the Warriors. It'll be hard to beat any team when you do that.
You know what's worse? The Celtics weren't exactly playing lights out either. They scored just 3 points 3.5 minutes. The Warriors had a chance to take a significant lead if they could have just taken care of the ball and knocked down some jumpers. They could have taken the lead against the Celtics late into the 3rd quarter!
The one thing that stands out to me in the play by play is this. 5:56 - Boston full timeout. Maybe this was the mandatory under 6 minutes timeout, but either way, Doc Rivers and co. took advantage. The very next possession they get the ball to Rondo who passes to KG for a bucket. Their scoring drought was over, the Warriors' was still going. After that timeout, the Celtics scored on their next 5 straight possessions! I don't know what was said or done during the timeout, but it sure worked. That one Celtics run put the game away and the 3rd quarter saved the Celtics.

3) Rondo Rondo Rondo
Rondo is a special player. You watch him operate on the court with the stars surrounding him and you can tell he's learned how to get them the ball where they like it. He's got the ability to get in the lane any time he wants and wreak havoc on the defense. His 12 assists show that he's able to find the open man as he runs the offense and gets in the lane. His 18 points came on just 12 shots. Additionally, 9 of his 12 shots attempted were from inside of 2 feet, he made 7 of them. It's a testament to how good he is at creating for others and scoring while in the paint.
The Warriors struggled keeping him contained especially in that 3rd quarter. When the Celtics made their run after the 5:56 timeout, Rondo was involved on 4 of the 5 consecutive scoring possessions. Assist to KG, makes a layup, makes another layup (and 1), and then assists to Pierce. All in all, he had 12 points in that quarter to go with 4 assists.
Again, he's a special player and fun to watch.
4) 21 Turnovers
Unacceptable. 21 is good in blackjack, but when you give the ball away that many times, more than likely, you're going to lose. Heck, the Celtics had 30 points off turnovers! You can't give away possessions like that with poor passing and poor decisions.
Curry had 6 of them to go with his 7 assists and 4 steals. If he took care of the ball a little better this would have been one of his best games as a pro. Oddly, Curry was a +5 in 35 minutes. That means in the 13 minutes he was off the floor the Warriors were -19. Crazy.
Vlad Radman had 5 turnovers and Randolph had 4. Sheesh. Are the big men handling the ball that much or are they just careless with the ball? Methinks they're careless. I expect that from Randolph every now and then, but I have no idea what to expect from Vlad, certainly not 5 TO's.
This team isn't good enough to give away the ball like that and still win a game.

Corey Maggette for stepping up his game and taking on more of the load now that Jax is gone. Tonight: 23 points (8-13 FG's, 6-9 FT's), 8 boards, 3 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block.

Bell isn't coming back...
he’s an expiring salary dump that has no incentive to stay with the W’s. I love the way he plays and a younger, healthy version is one of the many things this team needs.
Jagz8 - November 18, 2009
Well he might be that missing piece of the puzzle...
Cpt. Jack in the Box - November 18, 2009
Azebuike or Bell?
If Bukie picks up his contract buy buy Bell. If not hello Bell!
dubzfan - November 18, 2009
W's have alot of missing pieces at this point.
I would agree that in 07-08 he would have been perfect for this team, but at this point Buike is more of an asset and more likely to return.
Jagz8 - November 18, 2009
What puzzle would that be? The plexing “how can we tie up money in mediocre players in the twilight of their career” puzzle?
jae - November 19, 2009
think we already got that one figured out?
Skeptic con Urquell - November 19, 2009
For What he Did Last Night....
to start. Bell showed something to his teammates by volunteering to play with the wrist injury, he can still play D and shoot the three without demanding the ball and he is a very good calming veteran presence on the floor. I’m not saying pay him lots of money and start him, but he would be a good asset on a young team needing a veteran leader that can provide them with a GOOD example of how to be a proffesional and team player.
ajtrinc - November 19, 2009
I was about to type that...
that’s my response Jae.
Cpt. Jack in the Box - November 19, 2009
sans Mikki and I'm happy
I’ve actually been happy with Radmon as well. He doesn’t have the best hands but a good backup 4/5 if we’re injured (like always) IMO.
FishStix - November 18, 2009
yeah, Vlad doesn’t rebound well, but he at least boxes out his man more often than not, allowing a teammate to get the board. they’ve rebounded well above a 70% clip on defense in the last 2 games compared to their usual 60some% range.
homer simpson - November 18, 2009
Yeah, he hasn’t been too bad. Definetley a role player though.
ajtrinc - November 19, 2009
Mickey Moore gets no love
gametime_gsw - November 18, 2009
He gets tons of love from me today...
That dunk early in the game over KG, you can clearly hear him shouting:

samuraaaaiiiiiii - November 18, 2009
he's a gigantic va-jay-jay
the man has no will to bang in the post.
he also sometimes looses track of the ball (AKA not paying attention)
FishStix - November 19, 2009
anyone else see that anthony morrow dunk?
that was awesome
GSWBALL - November 18, 2009
WHAT
Xero - November 18, 2009
Yeah he got his first dunk tonight
dubzfan - November 18, 2009
yeah, check the fanshots
i found someone who made highlights of this game
IQofaWarrior - November 18, 2009
I really wish Randolph would get back to the awesome
and stray away from the suck.
Bell was a pleasant surprise, I love this guy’s hustle.
Magette looked impressive, albiet his usual terrible passing.
FishStix - November 18, 2009
AR needs a Big Man coach.
They need to bring in a guy to work one on one with Randolph on his post game and his D. sort of like the role that Clifford Ray used to have. AR has loads of potential but I don’t have a clue as to who is teaching this guy how to play down low.
Jagz8 - November 18, 2009
Nate Thurmond!
gametime_gsw - November 18, 2009
agreed.
Jagz8 - November 18, 2009
that'd be bad-arse
FishStix - November 19, 2009
Chris Webber?
Reverend_Randy - November 18, 2009
They have 2 big men coaches. Russ Turner (guy who developed Tim Duncan at Wake / Stanford’s big man coach under Montgomery) and Scott Roth. They also have a player development coach in Rico Hines and I think they send their players to Tim Grgurich in Las Vegas after Summer League – i think Wright went 2 seasons ago & Morrow last yr.
homer simpson - November 18, 2009
thx for the info.
still would like to see them bring in a name guy to individually mentor Randolph, maybe deal with his emotional/frustration issues when he goes to the bench. seems like its a rotation between the assistants when dealing with him at this point.
Jagz8 - November 18, 2009
yeah. Nelson needs to sit with Randolph and let him know that for now he’s gonna get around 20+ minutes a game and if he keeps improving this season, he’ll eventually be around 30. i really wish the media would stop hyping him as the next big thing – he has a long ways to go but all these media types keep inflating his ego.
Monta’s right too (i’m assuming AR’s who he mostly means with his young guy comment). AR seriously needs to watch more film. He’s ridiculously late on his rotations. He might as well not even rotate and pray for a miss instead of abandoning his rebounding position for a shot that he has no chance to block. glad to see him not flop in this game though.
rather than a name guy, i’d love to see them bring in whoever taught Pau Gasol – always keeps the ball high so little guys can’t swipe steals, great footwork, good position defender, decent lost post moves. if they are going name guy i’d pick Kevin McHale who is good friends with Nelson.
homer simpson - November 19, 2009
Raja Bell gets an honorable mention
for volunteering to play and relieve the short handed Warriors on a back to back before he flies back to Charlotte for surgery. But the Warrior Wonder is definitely Maggette tonight. His hustle to help clean up misses and get rebounds was very noticeable. I thought he was the one stable spot when the Celtics D collapsed our team mentally in that 3rd qtr.
Otherwise, I respect the effort. I think we tried to make things difficult for the Celtics on their offensive end. But their experience and poise overcame our inexperience, which led to our frustrations, which took us out of our game in the 3rd. Disappointed, but oh well.
For those who look at the box score and think AR had a nice game in the offensive rebound department, they all came from one sequence where he kept trying to tip or put back his own miss. It was a great effort by AR, but it does inflate that stat somewhat.
Nice steal, dunk at the end, Morrow.
IQofaWarrior - November 18, 2009
and deflated his shooting %
randolphforpresident - November 18, 2009
yep, that too
IQofaWarrior - November 18, 2009
Beidrins would have been 100% from the field when Baron was here
If it wasn’t for those miss-tip-miss-tip-basket sequences that boosted his rebounding numbers.
samuraaaaiiiiiii - November 18, 2009
I agree, we actually showed defensive effort.
there were very few open shots for the Celts. Almost every shot had a hand in the way. But god damn if Ray Allen and Peirce don’t sink their shots regardless……
FishStix - November 19, 2009
Props to the Warriors
But fatigue set in, specially back to back game to east finest.

Yup, a 14-1 run in the 3rd killed us.
IQofaWarrior - November 19, 2009
First time I've seen that. I dig.
It shows exactly what I was saying last night. Notice in the 1st and 3rd quarters, as soon Curry left the game the graph goes way in the Celtics direction. More likely it’s proof that the Warriors need a point guard -and Ellis is not it – than that Curry is really playing great. Still Curry seems to be doing what PG should – making the team play better.
cybermaldonado - November 19, 2009
A fine effort. Not actually a competitive game — much like the Cavs yesterday, the Celts were listless in the first half, hoping they wouldn’t have to expend any energy to beat us. We made them expend some, and I guess there’s value in that, but we never had them in anything approaching trouble. The game was theirs whenever they bothered to take it. Still and all, when you’re on the road finishing a back-to-back and you’re dressing eight, a 14-point loss is nothing to be ashamed of.
Corey Maggette is clearly our best player right now, by a pretty comfortable margin. His offensive shtick is as sharp (and irritating) as ever, he’s playing energetic defense, he’s playing multiple positions capably, and he’s passing. He sucks at passing — he’s so bad at it that I’m not actually convinced he should be doing it. But he is doing it. You can’t fault him for anything right now. And for the second straight night, Curry had a better game than his line suggests, as a couple of his passes were dropped and bungled. He’s still got some learning to do… the Celtics deflected a number of his passes, which should be a good lesson for him about how skilled NBA defenses can be. But he was a big offensive asset, and not horrible on defense. He got beat several times, he picked up a bunch of fouls, but he battled hard and created some positive plays. Really promising performance.
Monta continues to work hard, and the non-scoring parts of his game are coming along nicely, but he’s really not making much progress on the shooting front, and his plus-minus numbers continue to be horrible. Not sure if it’s mental or physical or what, but I’m officially worried at this point. It’s time to make him a shooting guard again and simplify his role; even if the plan is to trade him, playing the two and focusing on scoring will help his value. Randolph was the diametric opposite of Curry, as he played much worse than his numbers suggest. On the one hand, it’s impressive that he can get decent results out of totally harebrained play. On the other hand, this is getting annoying… he needs to start figuring things out soon.
Morrow didn’t shoot often (or well), but it’s not the worst thing if he has the occasional chance to focus on other parts of his game… he did okayish on the non-scoring front. Bell gave a very satisfying veteran performance. Having surgery in the morning, so don’t get too attached to him, people. Radmanovic did not play well at all, but his heart seems to be in the right place on offense, and he wasn’t the worst defender out there for us tonight.
The worst defender out there for us tonight was Mikki Moore. I have never seen such invisible big man defense in my entire life. I understand that the guys were told to avoid foul trouble (not that Mikki succeeded), but seriously, had he been told that a bus would explode if he raised his hands above waist level? It was like he was begging the Celtics to score easy buckets. Even if he keeps up his improved catching and solid passing, he’s a huge, huge detriment. Awful stuff.
It may not have been a fair night to rate Nellie’s coaching performance one way or the other… it was going to be a rough game regardless. But let’s just note that 1) we got pummeled in the third quarter yet again, 2) we continue to be better with more normal-sized lineups, something that should surprise nobody other than Nellie, and 3) we’re down to eight players because of the laziness of the front office, a decision-making body with Nellie’s hands all over it. Shed no tears for Nellie in this one. Some observers may lament the fact that a legendary coach is ending his career with a team this hapless, but the truth is, Nellie is simply lying in the bed he made. This is what happens when you opt for an abnormally small roster and don’t teach it how to do much of anything.
We end our toughest road trip of the year with a record of 1-4. That’s really not all that bad, given the circumstances; we went 0-5 on the analogous East Coast swing last year, despite a substantially healthier team. We seem to have shaken off the really black doldrums of the games against the Clippers and Kings, which is a good thing. Unfortunately, our schedule is only getting worse from here. Our next nine games: Blazers, @Mavs, @Spurs, Lakers, Pacers, @Nuggets, Rockets, Magic, @Thunder. All nine teams are at .500 or better… seven made the playoffs last year. The weakest team of the group is probably the Pacers, and they already beat us up once. Don’t be surprised if you wake up on December 8th and see that we’re 5-17. This is gonna get worse before it gets better. And frankly, if it gets so bad that Nellie decides to quit, I’m all for some suckage.

"OH YEAAHH!!!"
Golden State Warriors decrepit veteran MIKEY! Moore screams after dunking over Kevin Garnett’s shoulder.
Seriously though, Moore seems to rotate and be vocal an everything, he just will not contest a shot… ever.
Randolph does need to start showing some mental progress at some point. My biggest fear is that he is trying to do too much because he wants to show off his skill-set and he really does want out of GS like all the conspiracy theorists claim.
Even I am slowly coming around to Corey Maggette… The more he passes, the less I hate.
My biggest hope has now officially become: new owner by the time Curry needs to be resigned.
samuraaaaiiiiiii - November 19, 2009
The F.O. said we’re limiting the number of people on our roster to save money. Nellie doesn’t make those kinds of money decisions, so I don’t blame him for us not having signed another big. The bigs we have are a pretty good bunch: Biedrins, Turiaf, Wright, Randolph, Rad, Mikke. Another month, we’ll be 5 deep. In 4 months, we’ll be six deep with bigs, assuming we don’t waive Mikke. If we ever get healthy consistently, we’ll be strong at the 4 and 5. Of course, then someone will get disgruntled and we’ll have to move them.
Naticus2 - November 19, 2009
Did the FO really say that? Right now, they could only add someone by releasing someone else since we’re at the 15 contract limit or petitioning for a 16th player. I don’t know if they petition would be approved or not, but it’s not like the Warriors could just start welcoming in new players even if the FO was willing to spend the money. My guess is that it would be approved only after the Warriors first cut someone already under contract.
With Law traded, the chief candidates to be released for a fresh warm body would be George or Speedy. Speedy holds a larger contract that may actually be a valuable trade chip. George’s contract is a less valuable, but still not entirely worthless trade chip. He’d be the guy to go.
jae - November 19, 2009
The original plan was something to that effect. They’ve obviously changed plans other than the goal of being cheap this year.
Naticus2 - November 20, 2009
The play that stands out was when a Celtic was at the free throw line. It was Mikki terrible boxing out that allowed the Celtics to pick up the missed FT. gah
Badly Browned - November 19, 2009
I honestly felt
That Morrow didn’t belong on the court at times. He looked scared. Hopefully that’s just a one game thing, but I will keep an eye on him.

This is gonna get worse before it gets better. And frankly, if it gets so bad that Nellie decides to quit, I’m all for some suckage.
we gotta just suffer thru those 20 something wins nellie needs before worrying about things getting better. There’s always next year but if we don’t get enough wins this year then next year might be a drag too.
Skeptic con Urquell - November 19, 2009
Perfect recap Junkie....
I also was very impressed with Magette and for Bell stepping up and playing despite being injured…. As my old sig said… “its about hear, its about fight, its about being a warrior” he was all of that tonight…
If at all possible I would really like to keep him in the team AND Buike if we can. For me the future team and possible outgoings looks like this:
Team for the future (not in positions):
Curry, Morrow, Buike, Randolph, Bell,
Possible variables that may stay:
Ellis, Turiaf, Biedrins, Magette, Radmanovich, Wright
Likely to be gone;
CJ, Moore, George, Claxton,
Ideal team:
Curry
Ellis
Buike
(Star Big)
Biedrins
Bench:
Morrow
Randolph
Turiaf
Bell
Radmanovich
Magette
(Another PF focused on D)
(Another young version of Bell)
Wright
If Radman and Magette could be traded for another good PF that might work as well.
But overall….we have ball movement baby!!!!!!!!!!!
Very pleasing to see some effort on D and ball movement.
One major area of work that needs focus right now is….“ANTICIPATION” many of our players do not “EXPECT” the ball…and when the likes of Ellis and Curry are hurling 100mph passes around, these guys have to be more prepared to receive a pass at all times.
I am seeing a lot of fumbles at the moment, where it seems they are just not ready to receive the ball. Ball movement destroys ANY team. If the ball moves so fast that the defending team cannot get near it to defend, holes open up for easier opportunities.
But overall…this team is playing so much better as a cohesive unit, now that the primary ball hog and interupter of the fast break has left the team. I am now seeing 5 players hustle back on D, rather than one strolling back while still having a go at the refs… for that alone…the trade was VERY worthwhile…
BritWarriorGSW - November 19, 2009
Hopefully Bell decides to resign for a reasonable price.
He could potentially be a great defensive veteran that our young players could learn from.
ryogahibiki - November 19, 2009
+1
If he’s healthy, it makes the Jackson trade even, if not in our favor considering the contract extension and Jackson’s attitude.
ajtrinc - November 19, 2009
Nate Thurmand
After hearing this guy last night. I think he could coach the Warriors. Made a whole lot of sense. Although the Dubs lost yesterday, I noticed a different team chemistry. The ball was moving around well and I finally saw glimpses of the team actually playing defense. Turnovers killed them, and cost them the game!
Oakland Warriors - November 19, 2009
I'd go for that
ryogahibiki - November 19, 2009
Anyone
miss Stephen Jackson?
Losses seem more bearable when we don’t have Stack Jack tossing up 26 shots a game.
saintdee - November 19, 2009
no
He was our best defensive player, and last night, Bell already showed he was better than JACK even when injured.
Bell shows how much we have been missing that defensive guy who can score if he has to, instead of vise versa
warriorsvictim - November 19, 2009
Funny that Bell said that the injury was limiting his “intangibles”. I’m not sure what he considers “intangible”. The tangible aspects that I saw seemed to be there though. At least for the time being, he’s a welcome addition.
jae - November 19, 2009
Ha ha
“Intangible…does not compute…you will now be e-liminated.”
Supafishal - November 19, 2009
. I’m not sure what he considers "intangible".
it’d hard to do a proper stringline takedown with a sore wrist.
Skeptic con Urquell - November 19, 2009
I did see him swipe at the ball with the off hand a couple times. I think for Bell intangible is primarily deflections and steals, and maybe a little bit of dirty work fighting through screens.
With two good hands he still looks like he owuld be the man on D
warriorsvictim - November 19, 2009
He says he couldn’t do the hustle plays well. I suppose those can be intangible. If you’re fighting for a rebound and neither you nor the opponent next to you gets it, because you hustled, there’s a 50/50 chance one of your teammates gets it. If you don’t hustle, there’s a good chance the opponent next to you gets it. It happens sometimes. That doesn’t show up in a stat sheet. I suppose things like that happen a few times a game and may effect your opponents and your teammates psychologically as well.
Naticus2 - November 20, 2009
If this is the new Maggette we're going to see for the rest of the year, I'll be very happy.
+1 to that Fant Junk.
I really liked what I saw of Maggz last night. Hope we do see this as his consistent play.
Hmm…I was just about to complain about how his free throw shooting hasn’t been impressive since he joined the Dubz, but last season he shot 82%. Maybe I’ve only noticed the times he has bricked on the line.
Still early in the season, so I guess we shouldn’t worry about his 76% shooting right now. Hopefully he can bump it up to 90% shooting and have a lot of FTA’s.
That would be great. Go Warriors Always.
ROMESdavidWOOD37 - November 19, 2009
I think he'll be OK
He gets a ton of FTAs, so he will have no trouble pulling the % upwards over time
warriorsvictim - November 19, 2009
Only thing missing.....
Is his passing skills. If he can move the ball around when he really doesn’t have a shot it would make the team that much better.
But it definatley does not hurt to have him on the floor as he has stepped up his D and rebounding. I see him becoming more of a leader for this team than Ellis, although I did see some nice things from Ellis last night. It looks like he is starting to get used to playing with Curry as they had a little more interaction during the game and taking aside Radmonovic without dressing him down was a good sign.
ajtrinc - November 19, 2009
By the way...
I think that picture of Nellie…he is really in front of Hooters yelling out:
“Table for one please!”
* looks around nairbusly *
ROMESdavidWOOD37 - November 19, 2009
Anyone here know how the meeting went with Ellis today???
GSWfan4lyf - November 19, 2009
something positive from monta, maybe learning something
monta comment about Bell
“That surprised the mess out of me,” guard Monta Ellis, who had 18 points on 8-for-21 shooting, said of Bell’s appearance. “I saw him sitting down. Then to see him take his uniform off and go in the game … He went out and did a great job, actually. He knocked down a couple shots. Rebounded. Defended well. For him to go out and do that, that says a lot. That’s a great vet. Once he gets going and gets healthy, ain’t no telling what we can do.”
scraider3 - November 19, 2009
He went into the game without a uniform?!?
jae - November 19, 2009
another quote about bell, showing leadership that was missing with jackson
“That meant a lot for me,” guard Anthony Morrow said. “He wanted to be with his teammates. It’s a reflection of the kind of person he is. We definitely need that. Everybody kind of needs to rally around each other and play hard for each other, show a lot of heart, a lot of courage, lot of character. I appreciated that.”
